RAe 2/4 1001

Designed and built as lightweight prototypes CLe 2/4 201 and 202, these vehicles were intended to be used as trams and express trains in off-peak hours as well as company cruises. Compared to previous vehicles, the maximum speed was set for the first time to 125 km / h. Till then the maximum speed to operate trains was 100 km / h at the SBB. Since only the single ride was required in the specification book, during construction the installation of normal pulling and pushing devices was not considered as well as, the installation of an automatic brake. The railcars were equipped with a direct-acting brake, which was controlled together with the electric brake. The railcar 202 was Prototype for the BBC hollow shaft drive, which was later used in many traction vehicles.

Various solutions were examined to optimize luggage transportation. For example, a single-axle ski trailer has been used for several years. In order to give the railcar the possibility to pull trailer vehicles, they were equipped from 1944 till 1949 with a pulling and pushing device, to which the vehicle construction had to be strengthened accordingly. Further, the automatic brake "Westinghouse" was installed as well as a line for the train heating in trailer vehicles. In 1952, the chassis of the railcar 601 was extended by 2.60 m and various facilities were renewed.

The vehicle numbers changed several times, from 201 to 601 and later to 1001. To preserve the railcar, it is now used by SBB Historic with a top speed of 100 km / h.
